Kudung Stupa and Ceremonies

In honor of Samtrul Rinpoche’s memory, his devotees and family members initiated the
construction of a kudung stupa in 2001. This sacred structure was designed to enshrine
Rinpoche’s remains, serving as a central point of reverence and spiritual practice at Samdrup
Dargeyling Monastery.
The consecration of the stupa in 2005 was a momentous occasion, celebrated with both
grandeur and solemnity. The ceremony was led by His Holiness the 70th Je Khenpo, Trulku
Jigme Choda, and graced by the presence of Royal Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon
Wangchuck. Adding to the site’s sanctity, the Zangtokpalri Lhakhang was constructed on the
very spot where these revered figures stood during the inauguration.
This historic event not only reinforced the spiritual significance of Samdrup Dargeyling
Monastery but also cemented its role as a vital center of worship, cultural heritage, and devotion
in Bhutan. The kudung stupa remains a symbol of Rinpoche’s enduring legacy, drawing
devotees and visitors alike to reflect, pray, and honor his teachings.

A Lasting Influence Samtrul Rinpoche’s passing in 1999 marked the end of a remarkable journey, yet his legacy continues to inspire generations. On the 20th day of the 11th month of the lunar calendar,
Rinpoche entered nirvana, a moment of deep spiritual significance for his devoted followers and
the broader Buddhist community.
Rinpoche’s contributions to spirituality and Buddhist teachings remain unparalleled. Through his
tireless efforts in establishing sacred spaces, fostering the Nyingma tradition, and sharing
profound wisdom, he left an indelible mark on Bhutan’s spiritual and cultural landscape. His
teachings, embodied in the enduring presence of Samdrup Dargeyling Monastery, continue to
guide and uplift those seeking spiritual enlightenment, ensuring that his influence resonates far
beyond his lifetime
